Origin and Creation of Pickleball
Pickleball was invented in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Washington, USA.
The sport was created by three dads—Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum. The story goes that they were trying to come up with a game to entertain their children during the summer.
Initially, the game was a mix of several sports. The three dads combined elements from badminton, ping-pong, and tennis. They used a badminton court, a lowered badminton net, and ping-pong paddles.
The original ball was a wiffle ball, which is similar to the perforated plastic ball still used in pickleball today.

There are a couple of theories about how the game got its name:
-
The "Pickle Boat" Theory: Joel Pritchard’s wife, Joan, claimed the game was named after the pickle boat in crew, where oarsmen were chosen from the leftovers of other boats. Since pickleball was a combination of different sports, the name seemed fitting.
-
The "Dog" Theory: Another popular story is that the game was named after the Pritchards' dog, Pickles, who would chase the ball and run off with it. However, some say that the dog was named after the game, not the other way around.

Development, Growth and Modern Popularity of Pickleball
Pickleball game quickly became popular among the families on Bainbridge Island, and it began to spread to other communities in the Pacific Northwest.
As the game grew, official rules were developed. In 1972, the first official pickleball court was constructed. The game evolved with standardized paddles and balls. The USA Pickleball Association (USAPA) was founded in 1984 to promote the sport, establish rules, and organize tournaments. Since then, the game has grown exponentially, with millions of players worldwide
Today, pickleball is played in many countries across the globe. It's especially popular in the United States and Canada, where it has a strong following among all age groups.
Numerous tournaments are held every year, including the USA Pickleball National Championships. The sport is particularly popular in retirement communities but has also found a younger audience.
There has been talk of pickleball potentially becoming an Olympic sport in the future, reflecting its growing popularity and international appeal.

• Space
It is important to make sure you have enough space for our pickleball court. A regulation pickleball court is 20'x44' long for doubles play. This usually has additional space around the court for serving area and safety. Our standard pickleball court construction provides a court 44'x64'. Allowing plenty of room for those power-house serves.
• Pickleball Court Install Materials
Choosing the correct materials for your court is vital. The key to a long lasting pickleball court is a solid, durable poured pad. We only construct concrete pickleball courts to provide long lasting life and play. A strong pour provides stability against cracks that allow water and moisture to build up and surface, that then ruin the paint and surfacing of your court.
• Pickleball Court Construction & Fencing
Depending on where your court is being installed, it may be vital to include fencing to prevent those wild returns and lobs from straying too far. Ask us if you think a fence may be right for your court construction.
• Pickleball Court Installation - Net
We provide a quality net when providing pickleball court construction services. A regulation net is 34" at the sidelines and 36" at the center, with proper tension to ensure fair play.
