Origin and Creation of Pickleball

Pickleball was invented in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Washington, USA.

The sport was created by three dads—Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum. The story goes that they were trying to come up with a game to entertain their children during the summer.

Initially, the game was a mix of several sports. The three dads combined elements from badminton, ping-pong, and tennis. They used a badminton court, a lowered badminton net, and ping-pong paddles.

The original ball was a wiffle ball, which is similar to the perforated plastic ball still used in pickleball today.

  • There are a couple of theories about how the game got its name:

    1. The "Pickle Boat" Theory: Joel Pritchard’s wife, Joan, claimed the game was named after the pickle boat in crew, where oarsmen were chosen from the leftovers of other boats. Since pickleball was a combination of different sports, the name seemed fitting.

    2. The "Dog" Theory: Another popular story is that the game was named after the Pritchards' dog, Pickles, who would chase the ball and run off with it. However, some say that the dog was named after the game, not the other way around.

The History and Rise of Pickleball: From Bainbridge Island to the World Stage

Pickleball originated in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Washington, quickly becoming a favorite pastime for families. As its popularity spread throughout the Pacific Northwest, communities began embracing this fast-growing sport.

By 1972, the first official pickleball court was built, and as the game matured, so did its structure—with standardized pickleball paddles, balls, and rules. The founding of the USA Pickleball Association (USAPA) in 1984 marked a major milestone, helping to organize pickleball tournaments, promote the sport nationwide, and ensure consistency with the official pickleball rules.

Today, pickleball is played internationally, with a strong fan base in the United States and Canada. It attracts players across all age groups—from youth to seniors—and continues to gain traction in both urban areas and retirement communities.

Major events like the USA Pickleball National Championships draw competitive players and fans from around the world. With millions now playing the sport and professional leagues on the rise, there is even discussion of pickleball becoming an Olympic sport in the future—an exciting sign of its growing global appeal.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Much Space Do You Need for a Pickleball Court?

The standard pickleball court dimensions are 44 feet long by 20 feet wide. However, for the best playing experience, it's important to include extra space around the court—especially at the baselines—to allow room for serving, movement, and extended rallies.

For optimal gameplay and safety, we recommend a 30' x 60' pickleball court layout, which meets the recommended space for official pickleball court construction. This setup provides adequate room for both recreational and competitive play, whether you're installing a backyard pickleball court or building one for a community or sports facility.

How Long Does It Take to Build a Pickleball Court?

The timeline for pickleball court construction can vary based on site conditions and weather, but on average, you can expect about 6–8 weeks from the start of construction to final completion. One of the key stages is the concrete curing process, which typically takes 28 days for a residential court under normal weather conditions.

Can You Install a Pickleball Court in Winter?

Absolutely! Many people assume you have to wait until spring to start, but that’s not the case. Our pro-grade concrete pickleball courts allow us to begin site prep and pouring even during the winter months.

We’ll handle excavation and pour the concrete during colder seasons, and then return in the spring to finish surfacing and striping. That way, your court is ready for play as soon as the weather warms up—beating the spring and summer construction rush.

  • Pickleball Court Construction Materials

Selecting the right materials for your pickleball court installation is essential for longevity and performance. The foundation of a long-lasting pickleball court starts with a durable concrete pour. At Tennessee Pickleball Courts, we specialize in building concrete pickleball courts, which offer unmatched stability and durability over time.

A solid, high-quality pour prevents the development of cracks that can trap water and moisture. These cracks, if left untreated, can compromise the surface and paint of your court, leading to costly repairs and diminished playability. By choosing concrete court construction, you ensure a stable, smooth surface that can handle the demands of even the most competitive games.
